Another tour began in 1993, âThe Girlie Show World Tourâ. The album generated six hit singles: âEroticaâ, âDeeper and Deeperâ, âBad Girlâ, âFeverâ, âRainâ and âBye Bye Babyâ. The artist did not leave her music aside and at that time, she released her fifth studio album âEroticaâ, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. The first project from the venture was Madonnaâs own book called âSexâ which consisted of sexually provocative and explicit images, photographed by Steven Meisel and sold 1.5 million copies. In 1992, the entrepreneur, Madonna, founded her own entertainment company, Maverick. The next year she released her first documentary film âTruth or Dareâ aka âIn Bed with Madonnaâ which depicted her âBlond Ambition World Tourâ and offered a peep into her personal life.
The album was certified diamond and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling compilation album by a solo artist in history. Madonnaâs first greatest-hits, âThe Immaculate Collectionâ, including two new songs, âJustify My Loveâ and âRescue Meâ, released in November 1990. In April 1990, she began her âBlond Ambition World Tourâ whose Laserdisc release won Madonna a Grammy Award in 1992 for Best Long Form Music Video. From the album came another five hit singles including âExpress Yourselfâ and âCherishâ. The track was included on her fourth studio album âLike a Prayerâ which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. During a Pepsi commercial the track âLike a Prayerâ first appeared. In 1987 Madonna set off on the âWho's That Girl World Tourâ and also released a remix album with past hits under the title âYou Can Danceâ. It produced three number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100: âLive to Tell â,â Papa Donât Preachâ and âOpen Your Heartâ as well as two more singles: 'True Blue' and 'La Isla Bonita' that peaked in the top-five. Madonna's third studio album, âTrue Blueâ, was released in June, 1986 topping the charts in over 28 countries worldwide. The âVirgin Tourâ, Madonnaâs first tour, started in 1985 with the artist performing as an opening act for the Beastie Boys. The album also spawned the hit single âMaterial Girlâ. The title track remained on the top of the charts for six weeks. The album was certified diamond and sold more than 21 million copies worldwide. Her second album in 1984, âLike a Virginâ earned her global recognition and was her first number one on the Billboard 200. A year later her debut album âMadonnaâ hit the stands peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200 and producing the hit singles âHoliday,â âBorderline,â and âLucky Star.â Her debut single, âEverybody,â was released in 1982. The latter impressed record producer, Mark Kamins brought Madonna in contact with Sire Records where she signed a singles deal. Madonna began her career as a backup dancer for other artists before forming a rock band, the âBreakfast Clubâ with Dan Gilroy in 1979 and then âEmmaâ in 1980. Madonna was raised in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Avon Township and later moved to New York City. The âQueen of Popâ Madonna, Madonna Louise Ciccone, was born in Bay City, Michigan on Augto mother, Madonna Louise (née Fortin) and her father Silvio Anthony Ciccone.
